About Indiana AFL-CIO

The Indiana State AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations) is a federation of approximately 800 local unions in Indiana belonging to 50 International Unions. The National AFL-CIO is the parent organization and entrusts to the Indiana State AFL-CIO the power to carry out their policies and programs and to tailor and shape additional programs for Indiana. We are entrusted to promote and advance the objects and principles of the AFL-CIO.

The Indiana State AFL-CIO was formed on May 24, 1958 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Every two years a convention is held with delegates from local unions and councils.  Convention delegates have the power to amend the constitution, pass resolutions and establish current policy for the organization. Local unions pay a monthly per-capita tax based on their membership and councils pay an annual fee. Officers (President Ken Zeller, Secretary-Treasurer Joe Breedlove and Vice-Presidents) are elected to four year terms and make up the Executive Board, which meets four times a year and oversees the running of the organization between conventions.

Objectives & Principles

  1. To protect, maintain and advance the wages, hours and working conditions of all workers with due regard for the autonomy and integrity of affiliated unions.
  2. To encourage and assist in the formation of local central bodies; to aid and assist affiliated unions, councils and other affiliated groups in educational, and political action programs and other programs consistent with AFL-CIO policy.
  3. To encourage all workers without regard to race, creed, color or national origin to share in the full benefits of union organization. To cooperate with affiliated bodies in development of, and leadership in educational programs for their membership.
  4. To preserve the independence of this organization in political action. While preserving the independence of the labor movement from political control, to encourage workers to register and vote, to exercise their full rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and to perform their rightful part in the political life of the local, state and national communities.
  5. This organization shall be the official organization directing the Legislative program of AFL-CIO by securing passage of fair and equitable legislation and to oppose oppressive legislation.
  6. To aid and encourage the sale and use of union-made goods and union services through support of union label drives.
  7. To establish a strong and unified community services and public relations program consistent with National AFL-CIO policy.
  8. To enlighten public opinion and increase public understanding of the labor movement by the publication of materials, speeches, participating in panel discussions and any other means adaptable to the organization's needs.
  9. To establish a research department for the use of our membership in Legislation, COPE, Wages and Hours, Standards of Work and Automation.
  10. To protect the labor movement from any and all corrupt influences and from the undermining efforts of the Communist Party, Ku Klux Klan, National or State Right-to-Work Committees, or any fascists, totalitarian, or other subversive organization which opposes the democratic principles on which our nation and our organization were founded.
